Internal and external audits
Proactive is always preferable to reactive. Auditing is a fundamental part of maintaining a good compliance programme. Consider it as a ‘health check’ on the state of your process.

Routine Audit Schedule
Some businesses choose to incorporate their export compliance procedure into their ISO Quality Management System (QMS) which means that it should, ordinarily, be subject to routine internal audit and verification.
If it is properly linked to the standard operating procedures of other functions in the organisation as well, that then provides a comprehensive, routine audit schedule for the programme.
Other organisations may implement stand-alone policy and procedures for their sanctions and export compliance programme under another authority, e.g. a Legal department, which means it may not automatically be picked up in the scheduled audit programme.
Reviewing
Designing
Applying
Whichever basis you have chosen to operate your compliance procedures on, you may feel that you need help with either reviewing, designing, or carrying out an effective internal audit programme in order to verify your compliance.
Help is also available for external audits. In the UK external export compliance audits are typically triggered by registration for the use of certain export permits.
These audits are carried out by a representative from the ECJU (Export Control Joint Unit, within the Department of International Trade) and it is essential to prepare properly for them in order that they run smoothly, and that you can provide the auditor, or inspector, with the information that he or she is looking for.
The first time you are subjected to such an audit can be a bit daunting and we can help to remove any such misgivings and help you prepare with confidence.
